Yiyi Gu, Flowers, 2020. Oil paint on wood, 12 x 16 inches.
There is a unique feeling of “isolation” in Yiyi Gu’s works. That may be a result of an isolated childhood and years spent entertaining herself at home alone. Her socialization consisted of made up stories and dialogues that she fabricated as a way to interact with her toys. Today, she finds hidden beauty in daily life and comfort in banal objects such as glasses, chairs and tables.
