Yilin Sun

When I use copper wire to make my work, I feel a metaphorical connection to the blossoming flower. As a woman, I have been educated to be independent. But as I mature, I understand that people still expect females to maintain traditional roles. This work is made to remind myself and people that women are beautiful as they are. As free souls, we don’t need wires to trap ourselves into shapes or to conform to somebody’s norm.

This work is a development of my previous work “flower sacrifice”. It kept the flower shape of the last version, but I not only increased the size of the flower, but also added copper wires to give it a sealed feature. The opening flower suggests my process of shaping it into how I feel like it should look. The copper wire suggests my process of sealing the features back. In the process of making this piece of work, I do feel my connection to the flower. As a woman, I was educated to have my own feature. But as I grew up, I understood there are roles people expect to see females play. Majority of the women chose to hide their own traits. This is a work made to remind myself and people likewise that we are beautiful as it is.
