Nari Baek: Ilizarov (13 Years Old) (installation view), 2019.
Ilizarov is the name of this installation. It is also the name of the leg surgery that was performed on Nari Baek at age 13. After the surgery Baek had to live with giant metal pieces in her leg for more than six months, it was like torture. For this installation, she recreates the hospital room setting with white tiles, a surgical table, lights and a heart monitor for sound. Her “leg” is made of silicone and painted realistically. She recreates all of the nine metal pieces and connects them to this fake leg. Afterward, Baek is aware of the fact that she is more self-confident.
