Jenny Kim. Installation view from “Fall Open Studios”, 2019, New York.
Jenny Kim uses beautiful color to mask the harsh truths of reality. But it is a façade. She employs the emoji as an ironic substitute for sincerity—a situation that is analogous to her experiences in her native Tokyo. The Covid-19 pandemic is the inspiration for a new series about the contradictions and complexities that underlie social norms. Her work looks at what lies below the surface and cannot be easily expressed.
