Hanyu Yuan is very aware of the contrast between the Eastern and the Western worlds. Particularly, the impossibility of understanding an artwork from another culture. One does not gain an exact poetic feeling from a Tang Dynasty poem through an English translation because Chinese poetry has a totally different system of allusion. Yuan’s work addresses ambiguities such as this.
