There is a sense of peculiarity that Christina Athas looks for in her work—it’s a peculiarity that accurately reflects the many layers in her mind. Athas previously made straightforward paintings, but they felt alien to her sensibility. In her recent work she is constantly changing things from start to finish, leaving things “unfinished” and working on multiple visual ideas at once. She feels that she has finally tapped into her truest sensibility; one which holds many contradictions, absurdities and surprises.
