School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Re:Presentation,” an exhibition of paintings by BFA Fine Arts students, curated by faculty member Leigh Behnke. The exhibition will be on view from Wednesday, October 11, through Monday, October 30, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street, New York City.
“Re:Presentation” examines contemporary painting as an image-centric practice by this particular generation of artists. They are reconsidering content, imagery and subject matter which is unavailable in a formalist or non-objective vocabulary and as such, ideas of personal expression and political concerns are particularly prevalent in their work. Having been exposed to a wide range of visual data on the web ranging from fantasy and animation to horrific political and environmental violence, these concerns are incorporated as visual references and anchor points. There is a resurgence of interest in the introduction of representation as a means to contextualize their practice in the 21st century.
The show features the work of Aden Hardin, Amber Dacanay, Anastasiia Terekhina, Aurora Patton, Avery Mei Skillin, CROSS, David Steindl, Diana Torres, Donghee Yoo, Dos Perras, Elliot Havens, Emily Warren, Emma Rice, Grace Qian, Grace Ullman, Jae Park, Jimmy Johnson, Lauryn Casey, Michael Fried, Mina Kim, southorions, Nella Clersaint, Nicholas Kledaras, Peihan Deng, Rawnak Rahman, Soeun Choi, Victoria Jochnowitz, Yihua Zhu, and Yuna Kim.
The SVA Flatiron Gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00am– 6:00pm. Masks are encouraged but not required.
